On Wednesday, we celebrated 11 of our seniors, who, after graduation, will each travel to another state for an all-expenses-paid trip through the American Exchange Project. This year, our seniors will travel to New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Washington, DC, Tennessee, Georgia, and Wisconsin as part of the program.

American Exchange is a nonpartisan program designed to help students step outside their comfort zones and experience life in another part of the country. Participants stay with host families, explore their communities, and connect with students whose day-to-day life may look very different from their own.

As part of the program, we also host 11 students from all over the country. We are blessed to have 9 families who have stepped up to host. Their willingness to do this makes this experience possible for our students. If you are interested in hosting next year, please reach out to Kelly Jacobsen, the Exchange Manager for this project. The 11 traveling Seniors will organize Hometown Week, plan activities, and make connections with the visiting seniors.

This year, our seniors will travel to New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Washington, DC, Tennessee, Georgia, and Wisconsin as part of the program.

This is our first year participating in the American Exchange Project, and we are excited to make this program an annual experience. It gives our students the chance to go outside the Peninsula, step into someone else's version of America, and think more deeply about community and what civic engagement looks like. We are very excited to hear all about their adventures, to welcome the 11 visiting seniors from across the US, and to show off all that our Peninsula has to offer.

Washington State Healthy Youth Survey 2025

Our school is participating in the Washington State Healthy Youth Survey during fall 2025. The survey will be given to students in Grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 in large districts and students in Grades 6 through 12 in small school districts. The Healthy Youth Survey includes questions related to physical activity, unintentional and intentional injury, substance use, interpersonal relationships, school experiences, risk and protective factors, and access to school-based services. Survey results are used by schools, communities, and State agencies to plan programs to support our youth and reduce their risks. Participation in the survey is voluntary and steps are taken to ensure student privacy. There are no names or codes used to link a survey back to a student.

Among other exciting things, last week we celebrated with our IHS Staff during Appreciation Week. Thank you to some of our local businesses for cutting some sweet deals so that we could celebrate with little treats throughout. Thank you to Angie and Trina at Diamond Espresso who prepared nearly 40 coffee drinks for us. Long Beach Candy Company for the amazing chocolate truffles and Eddie at Drop Anchor who graciously offered two pans of their Apple Crisp with Ice Cream as well. A special thanks to Anna Taft who personally made the entire staff pulled pork sandwiches so that we had a delicious dinner before our late night conferences. She also showered everyone with gift bags. Thank you everyone for making us feel so loved and appreciated.

It's been a super busy couple of weeks at IHS which is great but that means we are behind in sharing all of the excitement so prepare for the multiple posts. Prom 2025 was a hit! The Masquerade Ball took place at the Elks Lodge in Astoria on Saturday, May 3rd where Wyse Mulinix and Megan Dille were announced as Prom King and Queen. Special thanks go to Mr. Heath and the Leadership class for planning such a spectacular event. The DJ was great. We had fabulous staff chaperones who volunteered their evening including Miss Chelaine, Miss Nicole, Ms. Jacobsen, Ms. Glenn, Ms. Anderson, Ms. Hofer, Mr. Pierce, Mr. Heath, Mr & Mrs. Vasquez and Mr. & Mrs. Burke. Our IHS Culinary Class prepared the spread of appetizers and desserts which were delivered and beautifully arranged by Mrs. Vasquez. The flowers from Nansen Florals were absolutely gorgeous. Anna Taft volunteered her time and energy to take dance photos and print and prepare them for every student. Of course none of this would have been possible without the planning, help, and decorating from Angie Jansma and the FISH PTO. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible for our students! We have the best community.
