Students and staff walking on the sidewalk

Today, from 9:02 to 9:28, Ocean Park Elementary School conducted our earthquake and tsunami drill with all grade levels and volunteers participating. Students did a great job—walking quickly, staying calm, and following directions the entire way. It took 21 minutes for all participants to reach our highest point. One class was not present, as they were away on a field trip.

We are grateful to Pacific County Fire District 1 and the Pacific County Sheriff’s Office for helping direct traffic and slow down drivers to ensure our students’ safety during the walk.

In the event of a real emergency, students and staff would likely have 10-15 minutes to make the walk to higher ground after leaving the building after the earthquake. Downed power lines, debris, and other impediments would make the walk more difficult as well. We will keep practicing!
