Ocean Beach Superintendent Search Process Update – December 11, 2018

The search for a new superintendent for the Ocean Beach School District continues.  Dr. Roger Rada and Dr. Glenys Hill, consultants working for the district, spent last Monday and Tuesday meeting with district stakeholder groups that included teachers, support staff, community members and partners, administrators, and parents.  Forty people participated in the focus group process and completed input sheets that collected their thoughts on the strengths of the school district, the challenges they think the district faces in the next several years, and the personal qualities they think the next superintendent should possess.  They were also asked to identify any current district employees who might be a good superintendent.

A theme that surfaced during the process is a concern about the short tenure of recent superintendents.  School Board members agree, and desire to find a superintendent who is willing to set roots in the area, and make the peninsula their home.   A significant number of focus group participants identified current employee, Amy Huntley, as a potential superintendent candidate.   Guided by the desire to find a superintendent who will serve the district for several years, the School Board plans to evaluate Huntley as a candidate for the superintendent position.

Huntley currently serves as the Director of Student Learning for the district and Principal at Ocean Beach Alternative School.  She began her career in Ocean Beach and has a proven track record of successful teaching and administration.  She has been a leader in securing multiple grants for the district, including the recent $700,000 facilities renovation for the high school science rooms to better support scientific study. In order to evaluate Huntley’s interest in the position and her ability to perform the duties involved, the Board is pausing the superintendent search process.  The Board plans to interview Huntley in early January.  After the interview the Board may decide to either hire Huntley or proceed with a full search.  The new superintendent will begin their tenure on July 1, 2019.
