    From the Superintendent

I am looking forward to a great year on the Long Beach Peninsula, serving the Ocean Beach School District as your superintendent. My wife and I are excited for the chance to be here in this beautiful location. We have already enjoyed the benefits of this great community, as we ride our bikes on the Discovery Trail, walk the Boardwalk, and devour meals at the many wonderful eateries about the area.

Many have asked me why the school district hired a one-year interim superintendent instead of a permanent person. This is due to the late spring date the previous superintendent was hired in Ames, Iowa. When searching for a new superintendent, districts usually start the process in January or February, to assure finding an adequate pool of quality candidates.  Many districts are reluctant to release employees in the late spring, as refilling those jobs becomes a problem. When hiring permanent is not possible, districts often opt to bring in an experienced and successful veteran superintendent, to keep the district moving forward and help the school board prepare for the upcoming hiring process. I come to Ocean Beach with 27 years of experience in education, which included 13 years as a principal and 9 years as a superintendent, all roles served in small rural school settings (my location of preference). I most recently retired from Onalaska School District as their superintendent.

I have been reaching out to meet staff and community as quickly as I can this summer. I have been continually amazed at the friendliness and kindness everywhere I go. My wife and I love attending community and school athletic events, so we will be busy and I hope to see you there.

As I have walked outside and inside all of the school buildings this summer, I have seen facilities that are well maintained and cared for. It immediately showed me the pride this staff and community have in the district. I am honored to serve your community for this year and look forward to meeting you.
