Thrive By Five
Ocean Beach School District was recently selected as one of two grant recipients, statewide, for a Thrive by Five Grant. Thrive by Five has partnered with Save the Children to launch Early Steps for School Success in Washington. Research has found that participation in intensive, high quality early childhood programs can improve school readiness skills and be a mediator against aggressive behavior; children in such programs are shown to be less likely to drop out, repeat grades and need special education; and, as adults, are less likely to commit crimes, more likely to be employed and have higher earnings. Early Steps to School Success is designed to provide culturally relevant early childhood education services to pregnant women and children from birth to age five, education services to their parents and ongoing staff training to community early childhood educators. It not only recognizes the essential role families have in preparing their children for school, but through community collaboration and creating strong connections between parents and the schools their children will attend, it reinforces parents’ roles as advocates in raising awareness for community-wide efforts that support school readiness.
Three elements distinguish Early Steps to School Success from other early childhood development programs: location – rural areas where few others support children’s early development; connection – a critical home/school bond between families and schools; and continuity –ongoing commitment of Thrive by Five and of Save the Children for high quality professional development to the Early Steps to School Success staff.Project Tasks: Through a home visitation and parent-child group model, early learning professionals work alongside families to help children develop strong literacy and communication skills before they enter kindergarten. For More Information: please contact Rosanne McPhail, at 642-8586.
