  • Statement from the Boys and Girls Club:

“With great disappointment, the board of directors of Boys & Girls Club of the Long Beach Peninsula has made the very difficult decision to discontinue its afterschool operations effective Thursday, October 24, 2019 at 7pm. Unfortunately, financial uncertainty and limited resources have created an ongoing operating challenge for the organization causing this extremely tough decision to be made.

The safety and well-being of the youth we serve are our number one priority. We want to assure parents, donors and the general public that our commitment is unwavering. Over the next several months, our board and Club leadership will evaluate and seek ways to continue providing youth in our community with a positive place to learn and grow, however, the Club will remain closed during this time. Our ultimate goal is to provide the young people who need us most with a sustainable program that will provide them with the opportunities they deserve.

Again, we deeply regret having to make this incredibly hard decision and appreciate the support we’ve been given by parents, donors and our community for the past 11 years.”

While not a district program, we value our partnership with the club to support our students and families. We will continue to partner with the club to help them find resources to support their excellent work. If you have questions, please contact the Boys and Girls Club directly.

Dear Long Beach Elementary and Ocean Beach Preschool Parents of Afternoon Bus Riders:

I have always taught my children that when you make a mistake, you own it and try to fix it and work to earn back the trust that you lost. I believe adults need to model this for their children.

For those of you whose children experienced excessively long bus rides and who had a very anxious time waiting for them, I am truly sorry. It should not have happened and is inexcusable. We are working diligently to ensure that it will not happen again.

Moving forward, starting today, there will be an additional afternoon route for Long Beach and Ocean Beach Preschool. For a few days there will be an additional adult on each bus ensuring that the stops are correct, that children get off at the correct stop, and that there is someone other than the driver to answer calls because the driver has to stop to answer when the bus garage calls him or her.

We take the safety and well-being of your children very seriously, and yesterday, we dropped the ball on this. If you wish to speak to me about your specific situation and concerns, please either email me at amy.huntley@oceanbeachschools.org or call the district office to schedule an appointment.

    Sincerely,

    Superintendent Amy Huntley's signature
